My office decided to allow everyone to work virtually in an effort to keep our staff safe from COVID-19. I looked at this as an opportunity to perhaps work on getting in shape. I decided to get a treadmill and put it in my home office.
The treadmill has been great and I have been using it nearly every day. I eventually felt up to trying a few virtual races. I really just wanted to finish I wasn’t worried about competing against anyone other than myself.
Then I came across something online that mentioned Spartan had opened up a virtual version of their popular races and decided to enter one. For those not familiar with Spartan Races you can watch this video. I am sure the in person events are much more difficult than the one I did.
During the July 4th weekend I participated in the Spartan Sprint, which is a 5k run and completion of the following 20 obstacles.
- 10 push-ups
- 10 burpees
- 10 mountain climbers (per side)
- 10 jumping jacks
- 10 air squats
- 10 forward lunges (per side)
- 10 hand-release push-ups
- 10 tuck jumps
- 10 plank up-downs
- 10 plank shoulder taps (per side)
- 10 knee slap mountain climbers (per side)
- 10 backward lunges (per side)
- 10 glute bridge raises
- 10 dips
- 10 decline push-ups
- 10 single-leg squats (per side)
- 10 double leg calf raises
- 10-second plank
- 10-second 6-inch leg hold
- 10-second iso-squat
As you can see the obstacles are really just exercises. The wonderful thing about their website is that you can watch videos of each of the obstacles in case you do not know how to do them properly. I myself could not do every exercise, but they allow you to replace with a “penalty” exercise of burpees.
I did feel accomplished after completing everything and quite a bit sore. I did the upgraded package so that I would get a shirt and medal, but if you do not care for that you can join the races for free. You can see the virtual races here, https://www.spartan.com/en/virtual-race .
I plan to do the trail run next which will take place on July 25th – 26th. I will post about it when I am done.
